Wandering Around The West – Day 1

Today was the easy day.  I pretty much knew that we’d end up in Bend, Oregon, on the first night.  There were thoughts of going north to the Olympic Peninsula, then up into Canada, but ultimately I didn’t want to run into cool/wet weather after experiencing it for the past several weeks.

We left in the late afternoon, stopping for a much needed Chipotle meal on the way out of town.  I didn’t realize just how hungry I was after the half marathon that morning.  A co-worker  had suggested that I skip US route 26 because it was boring, and opt instead for state route 20.  I stayed with the plane since we’d ridden state route 20 before and I wanted to see something new.  No doubt that US route 26 is boring.  There were a couple breathtaking vistas, but all-in-all I think I might have just preferred to re-trod state route 20.

Due to our late departure we didn’t stop at many places on the way over.  We stopped for gas and that was about it.  At our arrival in Bend we tried the Red Lion, where we’d stayed before, but it was booked up and we were re-directed to the Days Inn.  First time in a Days Inn, and so far so good.  It’s a bit outdated.  Regardless, it satisfies the needs of being clean, bed, and shower.

The two pieces of tech that I’d gotten for the trip, Scala Rider Powerset G4 headsets and Garmin Zumo 220 GPS, have been working well.  Tomorrow will be our first full day using both so hopefully the trend continues.

I’ve routed out a couple options for tomorrow’s ride.  Depending on how we’re doing we may head straight down into California, or out into Nevada.  We’re planning on more stops and photo ops so hopefully tomorrow’s post (if possible) will have more.
