Pre-Australia Trip

It really hasn’t sunken in yet that tomorrow Angie and I will be headed nearly half way around the world to Australia. It all started as a flippant comment over dinner one night.

I’m approaching a birthday, a decade birthday to be a smidgen more precise. While I don’t normally buy into these things, it was bothering me that Angie and I had talked about going to the Caribbean and Europe. I’d talked about going to Alaska and to Colorado on my motorcycle. It never amounted to more than talk. Similarly, the vacation we had planned was derailed due to my running injury earlier in the year. Bottom line is that I was feeling very restless.

One night, while feeling as per the above, I went online looking for trips to far flung locals which involved riding motorcycles. The closest I came up with was a trip into the Andes in Chili, but I’d missed the registration deadline by nearly two weeks. The next ones on the calendar were all well into next year which wouldn’t have made it very much of a birthday event.

A few nights later I shared this story with Angie. Upon completion I suggested that we should ride across Australia. “OK” she said — which didn’t seem right. I pushed further wondering just how long my luck would last. Strangely enough, it held out and next thing I knew Angie was looking for motorcycle trips in Australia online.

Bottom line there is that none of the trips started around when we wanted to travel, the travel dates didn’t work with our scheduled, and holy spendy pricetag! With those unknowns answered we moved on to just having a trip to Australia without motorbikes. Certainly not as exciting, but still crossing an item off the old bucket list.

That brings us up to today and everything is a go for tomorrow. Fingers crossed everything works out well.
