Day 9 – Coos Bay to Astoria

The bed at the hotel last night definitely left something to be desired.  It was nearly broken on the side that I was sleeping on so there wasn’t much sleep to be had.  That was unfortunate as we were planning on heading out early in the morning and had the most miles of any day yet ahead of us.  Needless to say we didn’t hit the road as early as we would have liked.  As a result we got stuck behind every RV in existence, that is road worthy, in Oregon today.  Would not have be much of a big deal, but there are some monsters out there that people pull up and around the windy turns along the coast.  Beyond the normal Oregon “five under” that most people seem to drive these things go even slower.  At one point I was going fifteen miles per hour below the posted speed — on a smooth straight away none the less.  The flip side of this coin is that you have the feisty out of state people who race you in their RVs.  That’s right.  Going to pause here and let that one sink in.  An RV raced a pair of motorcycles (us) today.  Pausing…  Obviously it didn’t win, but really?  Why even posture like that.  Admittedly the RV had Florida plates so you’ll need to take that into consideration.**

The coast was essentially the coast that we’ve been on before.  Although I do need to amend my statement yesterday.  I don’t believe that we’d ever ridden the motorcycle from Seaside to Astoria so we did take care of that piece of US Route 101.

We stopped in Lincoln City for a quick phone call to our Dads to wish them a happy Father’s Day.  Angie picked up a sea shell as a souvenir at the place we ate at, which was a mixture of a ice cream parlor, gift shop, sandwich shop, and coffee shop.  The place seemed a bit indecisive to me, but looked to be working for them.

We rolled into Astoria and registered at the hotel.  They bumped us up to the next available suite (with in room jacuzzi) for no extra cost.  I guess the desk clerk saw our weariness and felt sorry for us.  Anyway the room is amazing. We’d arrived just about dinner time so we hoofed it over to Fort George brewery for dinner.  Where we sat outside for dinner.  However, the temperature took a dive and they were kind enough to re-seat us inside when a table opened up.  Yeah Fort George brewery!

We just have about one day left on the road, and will likely spend the night in our own bed tomorrow.

** I know people in Florida, and I can vouch that they’re not all like this, but if I had to generalize…
