Day 7 – Penguins

Today was the last of the planned excursions. We started the day with a quick breakfast at the hotel and wandered around the complex a bit while we were waiting for our transportation. It really is like Las Vegas with its miles of passage ways and each of those littered with stuff to purchase. Not a bad thing, just unexpected.

Our transport arrived a tad late and we were off to see more wildlife with the promise of penguins parading. First stop was the Moonlight Sanctuary for a bit of lunch and observing a variety of wildlife which had been tamed to a large degree. The wallabies and wallaroos would eat out of your hand. The second stop was a colonial farm with showed had a partly working farm where you could see what life was like in the 1880s. Next up was a koala sanctuary with a boardwalk which was elevated to get you closer to the koalas. At this point we were getting overloaded with koalas and wallabies — enough already! On to Nobbies with had a bunch of Silverwing seagulls nesting with a large portion of the eggs had hatched. The was very strong coming in off the ocean and at points I had difficulty standing still to take pictures.

Finally, off to the Penguin Parade which is super cute on a number of levels. First, as they’re making their decision whether or not to come ashore. Then if they’re going to make a run for it to get to the nesting areas across the beach. And finally as they waddle off to their nesting cubbies scattered around inland. I’ve added a pair of Little Penguins to my list of birds I’d like to smuggle back to the PNW.

Arrived back at the hotel late.

Pictures are still uploading to the server and probably won’t be done before we travel home. I’ll work on it some more with our time left.
