{"id":188,"date":"2011-11-06T22:47:16","date_gmt":"2011-11-07T05:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/?p=188"},"modified":"2011-11-06T22:47:16","modified_gmt":"2011-11-07T05:47:16","slug":"the-owlwedge-quilt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rubschlager.com\/angie\/2011\/11\/06\/the-owlwedge-quilt\/","title":{"rendered":"The Owlwedge Quilt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So&#8230; After it took me somewhere around 3 years to complete my first quilt, because I just had to make a queen size one and then hand quilt each little piece.\u00a0 I figured I probably wouldn&#8217;t make another one.\u00a0 Well, never say never.\u00a0 I present to you the Owlwedge quilt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/06\/IMG_0002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-244\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/06\/IMG_0002-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0002\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did a few things differently this time around.\u00a0 The first thing I did, was actually have an idea of what the finished product was going to look like.\u00a0 I saw this pattern on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fonsandporter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fon&#8217;s &amp; Porter&#8217;s Love of Quilting<\/a>, which is this cute little public television quilting show that is actually quite enjoyable to watch.\u00a0 I was hankering to do another quilt, one that was more useable than the first one.\u00a0\u00a0 (<em>Side Note: <\/em>The first one, what with it&#8217;s years of work and hand quilting, is relegated to the reading\/guest room (put away when guests arrive) and pretty much pampered, because I&#8217;m not sure how to wash it and the backing fabric is white.\u00a0 Eek!<em>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So for my second quilt I wanted a work horse.\u00a0 I wanted a top I could quickly piece.\u00a0 I wanted to use batiks.\u00a0 I wanted a set of darker fabrics.\u00a0 I wanted the back to be a darker fabric as well.\u00a0 And there was no way on this green earth I was hand quilting it, so I knew it was destined for the longarm.\u00a0 And voila!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_245\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-245\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/06\/IMG_0003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-245\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/06\/IMG_0003-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Batik fabrics.. so variable. This also shows the quilting pattern, which plays off the motifs of the backing fabric.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Things I learned with this quilt.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Having a pattern is a good thing, it lets you order the write amount of fabric and stuff.<\/li>\n<li>I ordered all my fabric online from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fabric.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fabric.com<\/a>.\u00a0 Ordering batiks over the internet is, well,.. you might be surprised by what you get.\u00a0 I was pretty sure I didn&#8217;t order any browns.\u00a0 I tried to stick with blues, purples and greens.\u00a0 To be fair, a good portion of the brown you see in the pic above was bluish green.<\/li>\n<li>Wedge and other angled pieces do need to be offset just slightly when piecing so that they aren&#8217;t all caddywampus.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t matter much for this quilt but it will matter for my next project.<\/li>\n<li>Having the quilt quilted by a longarm quilter is awesome.\u00a0 Having same said quilter prepare and attached the binding to the front of the quilt is even awesomer!\u00a0 &lt;&#8212; that is totally a word.\u00a0 The quilt was quilted by Sally Howard of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quiltingcottage.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quilting Cottage<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I really need to make my stitches bigger when I secure the binding to the backside of the quilt.\u00a0 For some reason my default is about an eighth of an inch.\u00a0 So not only did it take forever, I think I pulled a hand muscle!\u00a0 Who does that?\u00a0 I do apparently.<\/li>\n<li>Hilarious backing fabric, even if it doesn&#8217;t totally match the colors on the front of the quilt, is worth it if it makes you smile.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/11\/IMG_0005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191 size-medium\" title=\"IMG_0005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/11\/IMG_0005-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The binding that broke me.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-192\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/11\/IMG_0007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-192 size-medium\" title=\"IMG_0007\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rubschlager.com\/angie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/11\/IMG_0007-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hilarious backing fabric.
